A Few Guys And A Bunch Of Shows
What’s next for Buddy Martin?
Buddy Martin is best-selling author, a distinguished, third-generation, Florida-born-and-raised journalist who has won nearly 200 awards. In September 2016, he co-authored Amazon’s No. 1 selling football book,“Head Ball Coach: My Life in Football,” with former Florida, South Carolina and Duke coach Steve Spurrier, published by Blue Rider Press.
In a recent column, Brad Rogers of the Ocala Star-Banner wrote of Martin:
" Martin has used his immense talents since coming home to be a civic advocate and activist. He has strived mightily to elevate the community conversation and enhance Ocala culturally. So while the Spurrier book event was supposed to recognize a legendary football hero and his new book, it was also a tribute to a homegrown talent that went away, found success, then came home to give back to the city he calls home, to the city he loves. But he’s a big-time, best-selling author now. What’s next? "
What’s next for Buddy is a new time and place for his popular daily sports talk show, Buddy Martin’s Sport Page, and a new You Tube channel. Martin is the founder and president of Buddy Martin Media, which is also launching a new You Tube Channel. BMM also plans to expand the syndicated The Terry Bradshaw Football Show on the Southern Pigskin Radio Network to new markets and will launch a comical new video blog “Seriously?!” with Buddy and Tom Schmitz. " Plus we are going to feature some other outstanding programming that’s not necessarily sports,” said Martin, who co-founded Florida SportsTalk on WMOP and WGGG in 1996 with partner Gordon Smith. "
Meanwhile, Buddy plans to keep going strong as an author. " I want to write books. I want to write a lot of books. I don’t know what it’s going to be about, but I want to write books. " Rogers wrote: " In short, Buddy Martin is going to do what Buddy Martin does best, what he loves. Good for him. Good for us. "
Martin also authored "Urban’s Way," the official biography of Florida coach Urban Meyer, and Buddy’s fourth book on Gator football. In addition, Buddy co-authored the autobiographies of two Hall of Fame athletes: Terry Bradshaw, "Looking Deep," and Dan Issel, "Parting Shots."
Martin is a product of the UF Journalism School and the former sports editor/columnist of Florida Today, The St. Petersburg Times, New York Daily News and Denver Post. He has also won awards as both a managing editor and newsfeatures editor, including the prestigious New York State Associated Press, and his Charlotte Sun staff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for news reporting. He won an Emmy as an associate producer for "The NFL Today Show" on CBS. Buddy also writes for the football websites GridironNow.com and SouthernPigskin.com – as well as for Woodypaige.com.
Martin was co-creator of "The Sports Journalism Summit" at The Poynter Media Institute in St. Petersburg. He said he also hopes to become a "preservationist" of vintage sports writing by featuring some of the work of his contemporaries on Buddymartinmedia.com.
Tom Schmitz, a sports talk radio show host, history buff and trivia expert, is a native Floridian from Jacksonville who has spent a sizeable amount of his life in Georgia and North Carolina. Tom graduated from Georgia Southern University, where he was a walk-on on the football team, with a degree in Social Science education.
Tom taught high school history at Anderly Academy and Avery County High School in North Carolina. He left the teaching profession to go into the restaurant business but found that unchallenging so he became a professional poker player, which he did until 2008.
That year, during a phone conversation with Gator great Chris Doering, the idea of moving into radio was born. Since then, Tom has worked in radio for eight year, five of them as part of the Buddy Martin Media team. He is currently serving as the producer and on-air contributor the syndicated show Southern Pigskin Tonight and The Voice of Ocala. Tom is also the host of The Saturday Sports Page and broadcasts Marion County Friday Night High School football with his play by play partner, Tom James.
